Students and the Field
The Students and the Field program will provide professional mentoring / career support and field placement opportunities to students of humanitarian action and response.
Program opportunities include:
1. Limited number of competitive placements (fellowships) with governmental and non-governmental organizations
2. Funding database for fellowships, internships and student research
3. Professional mentoring (matching students with experienced humanitarian professionals with shared career interests)
4. Support for identifying practicum and thesis research partners and topics
5. Support and pre-trip preparation for students pursuing field experience
This program will be introduced in phases starting in fall 2013. Interested students should contact hah@harvard.edu.

THE COGAN FAMILY FUND
The Cogan Family Fund for Humanitarian Studies provides funds for undergraduate and graduate students at Harvard University who are conducting field research related to crisisâaffected settings. The fund enables students to obtain international experience and an understanding of the crossâdisciplinary nature of humanitarian work. Students interested in advancing research, practice, and policy in the field of humanitarian assistance to populations affected by war, disaster, and other crises are encouraged to apply. Successful applicants are eligible to receive support for travel and research related expenses.

During the summer of 2011, HHI's Cogan Fund for Humanitarian Studies suported three students at the Harvard Graduate School of Design on a summer trip to Northern Japan to study activist art and contribute their design skills to community rebuilding efforts. In the summer of 2010, HHI's Cogan Fund sponsored a group of Harvard graduate students to conduct research in Idjwi, DRC. These seven students joined a Congolese medical doctor to conduct a comprehensive health needs assessment of Idjwi Island at the invitation of one of the Island’s kings. Learn more here.

CLIMATE INTERNS PROGRAM
Sponsored by the Red Cross/Red Crescent Climate Centre and Harvard Humanitarian Initiative
Who is eligible: All currently-enrolled Harvard graduate or professional students returning to school for the 2012-2013 school year.
What it is: $2,500 for a summer opportunity working with the Red Cross Climate Centre (http://www.climatecentre.org/) in one of their projects around the globe. The Climate Centre supports the humanitarian sector in understanding and addressing the humanitarian impacts of climate change and extreme events, and is seeking research support in the following countries:
Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Indonesia, The Philippines, India
Climate Interns will contribute to the research needs of the Climate Centre, and gain field experience with a respected international humanitarian organization. They will be asked to serve in the field for a period of three months, and to provide a report of their findings to HHI and the Climate Centre.

HUMAN SECURITY INTERNS PROGRAM
Center for Sustainable Development (Dhaka) and Harvard Humanitarian Initiative
Who is eligible: All currently-enrolled Harvard graduate or professional students returning to school for the 2012-2013 school year.
What it is: A summer opportunity working with academic partners in Bangladesh on a study related to social vulnerability and human security in the face of climate change. $2,500 in funding support is available.
Human Security Interns will be hosted by the Centre for Sustainable Development (CSD) at the University of Liberal Arts, Bangladesh (ULAB), and be paired with a bilingual ULAB student or researcher. Interns will consult with program coordinators from both HHI and CSD in developing their research projects.
